Wind Atlas of Egypt

• The Atlas covers the whole country to identifying the most promising areas of wind energy.

• The Atlas indicates that the wind energy resource in several regions are promising, particularly along the Gulf of Suez, the west and east of the Nile valley and Parts of Sinai.

• Wind Atlas for Egypt is considered the basis for all decisions related to the wind energy projects planning, and feasibility studies in the future.

Large Scale Grid Connected Commercial Wind Farms at Zafarana on Suez Gulf

• Currently, 305 MW wind farm has been operated in stages since 2001.

• The farm produces annually about 850 million kWh, C.F. 43%, fuel saving is about 190,000 T.O.E., and emissions avoidance is about 450,000 TCO2

• 240 MW in cooperation with the Japanese & Danish Governments, expected to be operated by ends of 2008 & 2009 respectively.

• An area of about 700 Km2 has been earmarked to host 3000 MW wind farms, where the site enjoys an excellent wind regime of about 10.5 m/s.

• A feasibility study for large wind farms at Gabal El Zeyt, besides a feasibility study for establishing 200 MW wind farm in cooperation with Germany & EIB is being conducted and finalized by end of 2007.

• 220 MW in cooperation with Japan (feasibility study has been completed in March 2005).

Development of Wind Energy Local Manufacturing

• In view of the previous experience in manufacturing some of limited scale wind turbines components (WTCs), NREA encourages the localization of such industry in Egypt based on technology transfer, joint Venture, under license against royalty or any other forms, whatever is the most appropriate.

• NREA invited several wind manufacturers to discuss this trend with the Egyptian concerned entities .

• Besides, repairs and rewinding of Generators have been done in Egypt since 2005, the repaired generators are working properly since then.
