Egypt To Add 1425 MW Of Electricity To Grid In September

Egypt plans to add about 1,425 megawatts of electricity to its national grid next month from a number of new power generation units, pan-Arab Asharq Al Awsat daily reports Monday citing Hassan Younis, the country's minister of electricity and energy.

Solar Complex Moves Ahead in Egypt

Virasa Technologies Inc. and Calensia BV have partnered to continue a planned integrated solar complex set for construction in Egypt’s Gulf of Suez.  The initial phase of the complex includes mono-silane and polysilicon production units in addition to a solar module production unit with an annual capacity of 50 MW with start-up expected toward the end of 2012. The plant will begin on 210,000 sq meters with a future expansion of another 110,000 sq meters planned for downstream investments in the solar industry.

 According to the Presidential decree number 218/2007, under which the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) was founded, the STDF mandate is to promote science and technology (S&T) through funding scientific research and technological development in a way that supports the complete cycle of innovation. The STDF vision is to act as a tool of change for the improvement of the life of Egyptians. Its mission is to generate a critical mass of human, logistic and infrastructure resources that are needed for a complete cycle of innovation. Consequently, the STDF specific objectives are to fund S&T activities, develop innovation capacity, enhance and monitor S&T systems and develop appropriate and flexible funding mechanisms for S&T.

Wind measurement in the Gulf of Suez

Wind speed measurements will be provided by GL Garrad Hassan for the 250 MW Gulf of Suez BOO Wind Power Project.  The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), as an agent of the 9 participants in the Joint Wind Measurement Program, signed the contract with GL Garrad Hassan, which will provide an energy assessment for the wind farm project.  The wind power project is part of the Egyptian plan to generate 20% of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Egypt’s El Sewedy Cables Sees Rising Demand in Asia, Africa

El Sewedy Cables Holding Co., the Middle East’s biggest publicly traded maker of power cables, is seeking to sell and invest in Asia and Africa as demand for its products slows in Europe, the company’s chief executive said.  The electrical equipment manufacturer is in talks about projects for power generation in Pakistan and wind energy in Turkey, Chief Executive Officer Ahmed El Sewedy said in a July 15 interview. El Sewedy is also considering building plants to produce wind turbines in Brazil and India, he said.  “Europe will be flat for the next two to three years, but Asia, Africa and the Middle East will keep on expanding,” El Sewedy said at his headquarters office in Cairo. In the wake of the global financial crisis, “we are trying to secure other markets, to see where we can fit,” he said.
