Egypt plans 100MW solar power plant

The Egyptian Electricity Ministry has unveiled plans to build a new $700m 100MW solar power plant between 2012 and 2017 that should further establish the country as one of the leading developers of utility-scale solar plants.  According to reports in the local Al-Ahram newspaper, the solar power project at Kom Ombo, near the Aswan High Dam hydro-electric plant, will be financed by a number of international institutions, including the African Development Fund and the World Bank. Additional finance is also expected to be provided through the UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) carbon offsetting scheme.

Egypt to receive US$220mn for clean energy

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity has obtained a US$220 million loan from the World Bank to implement a project to transport electricity from wind farms in the Gabal el-Zeit region to the electric grid, Minister of Electricity Hassan Yunis announced in a statement yesterday.

Yunis added said the loan agreement was signed by Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to fund the installation of 280km of 550 kilovolt double-circuit transmission lines from the Samalut station in Minya Governorate to the Gabal el-Zeit region. The Samalut station will be expanded through the addition of a 220/500 kilowatt transformer, according to Yunis.

Pakistan says Egypt's Sewedy eyeing wind investment

CAIRO, May 23 (Reuters) - Egypt's Sewedy Cables is considering investing in Pakistan's wind energy sector, Pakistan's foreign minister said in Cairo on Sunday.

"We have met with the Sewedy group yesterday and they have shown interest in investing in the energy sector in Pakistan. They have expertise and technology to fulfill our requirements," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters.

Egypt expects to see its wind power capacity reach 7,200 MW by 2020

The success of this bidding process is key to achieving a target to boost Egypt's wind energy capacity to 7,200 megawatts from the current 520 megawatts over the next 10 years.

Egypt is likely to launch a second tender round to choose from 10 wind power firms short-listed to build its first private wind farm. In the first round, Egypt shortlisted the firms in November 2009 for the 250-megawatt wind energy project. The most populous Arab country, trying to diversify its energy sources, aims to generate 12 percent of its power from wind turbines by 2020.
